Monday the McPherson City Commission approved, by a unanimous vote, an increase to solid waste fees.

The City of McPherson contracts with McPherson Area Solid Waste Utility for the collection and disposal of municipal solid waste generated by the residents of the City.

McPherson Area Solid Waste Utility will be implementing a rate increase effective Jan. 1 — the proposed solid waste trash rates for 2020 reflect a 3.5 percent increase to the base residential trash rates as well as a $.05 increase per month to the residential closed landfill fee.

Effective Jan. 1, 2020, the monthly minimum fee for residential service of solid waste collection and disposal service will be raised from $17.08 per month to $17.46 per month.

There was a discussion at the annual meeting of the McPherson Area Solid Waste Utility regarding the possibility of an increase in the recycling rate as a result of the decline in global recycling markets. Those market forces led to the discontinuance of some recycling services in Butler County,  according to reporting by the Butler County Times-Gazette, and discussion of changes to recycling programs in Harvey County, according to reporting by The Newton Kansan this year.

However, due to an increase in assessment the utility will not increase the per-household recycling rate at this time
