CANTON — On Sept. 13, Canton-Galva improved to 2-0 with a 46-0 win over Chase County. Fast forward nearly two months, and the Eagles defeated the Bulldogs by the same score in the first round of the 8-Man Division I Playoffs Thursday night in Canton.
Behind three rushing touchdowns from Brayden Collins and two rushing touchdowns from Landon Everett, Canton-Galva improved to 9-0 on the season. Eagles head coach Shelby Hoppes said Chase County did not try anything different from Week 2.
“They were going to try and beat us with their stuff, and that’s the way I would have approached it too,” Hoppes said. “We were prepared for it, and we played pretty well.”
Collins scored the first two touchdowns for Canton-Galva, while Everett and Brandon Huff each rushed for a touchdown in the first quarter. Everett, who rushed for two touchdowns of over 30 yards, scored early in the second quarter, and Collins concluded the scoring with 3:25 left in the half.
The Canton-Galva defense pitched its fifth straight shutout of the season. The Eagles have allowed 31 points in nine games, 23 of which came in Week 1 against Little River.
Canton-Galva hosts Lebo next Friday in the second round. Lebo is 7-2 and coming off a 58-8 win over Goessel in its playoff opener.
“I haven’t watched a lot of film on Lebo,” Hoppes said. “They’ve got a couple guys - their linebacker is a stud. At this point in the year it’s about being 1-0. We’re 1-0 right now and next week we have to work on getting to 1-0 again.”
