While the McPherson boys basketball team nearly picked up two large road wins over the week, the Bullpups will have to settle for a split.

After a rough start to the season against Andover, the Bullpups rebounded by shocking No. 1 and defending state champions Andover Central on Tuesday.

The Bullpups led most of the first half and took a 33-25 lead into halftime. When Andover Central responded by hitting three 3-pointers in the third quarter, the Bullpups found themselves down by one entering the fourth.

McPherson won the fourth quarter 13-7, giving the Bullpups a 52-47 win and delivering Andover Central its first loss since last year.

Seth Madron led the way with 16 points, Hayes Schmid scored 14, and Cody Stufflebean finished with 12. The Bullpups held all-state selection Xavier Bell to 17 points.

The Bullpups still have work to do as they will return home on Tuesday with a 1-2 record. McPherson faced Derby on the road on Friday, falling 57-53.

The Bullpups led by as many as 11 in the second half, but Derby turned it on down the stretch. Derby hit a key 3-pointer with 35 seconds left to give the Panthers the victory.

Madron and Stufflebean each had 18 points to lead the Bullpups, but Derby featured more depth than McPherson which was a huge key in this game.

Now 1-2, McPherson has a huge matchup against Buhler on Tuesday at the Roundhouse.
