Lena Swan, 92, went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Jan. 16, 2020. She was born on June 4, 1927, in Paxton, Nebraska, to Peter K. and Lena (Thiessen) Fast. At the age of 12, she accepted Christ as her Saviour when Theador H. Epp held revival meetings at her church. She was baptized on her confession of faith two years later. She dedicated her life to obeying God’s call to the mission field.

She married Hugh Gookin in 1948 and together they spent 17 years in Venezuela. They had three children, Becky, Berdie and Randy. Lena taught children classes, VBS, ladies Bible studies and youth clubs. She also made wedding cakes for the ladies from her church as a ministry. She also enjoyed making dolls, counted cross-stitch, and hand quilted quilts. Her greatest joy was leading each of her children to Christ, praying with them and helping them make good choices. She also loved interacting with her nine grandchildren.

Lena is preceded in death by her husband, Hugh of 61 years; brothers, Abraham Fast, Peter Fast Jr., and Dan Fast; sisters, Anna Fast, Katharine Adrian, and Marie Neufeld.

Survivors include her husband Bob Swan; children, Becky (Dwight) Goering of Galva, Berdie (Jeff) Bowlsby of San Ramon, California, and Randy (Marlys) Gookin of Elkgrove, California; nine grandchildren and their spouses; fifteen great-grandchildren; and sister, Bertha (Workentine) Steider of Nebraska.

Her life verses were Philippians 1:21, “For me to live is Christ and to die is gain. I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course; I have kept the faith.”

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday (Jan. 24, 2020) at Emanuel Bible Baptist Church, Galva. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
