NEWTON — The McPherson Bullpup boys’ wrestling team claimed five medals and a top 10 finish Saturday in the 57th Newton Invitational Tournament of Champions at Ravenscroft Gym.
The Bullpups were led by Rhett Edmonson, who took second at 145 pounds.
Edmonson fell to top-ranked (KWCA, Class 5A) Brandon Madden 4-0 in the finals at 145 pounds.
Goddard won the 24-team field with 213.5 points, followed by Blue Valley Southwest at 190, Maize at 183.5, Olathe South at 159.5 and Washburn Rural at 159.
McPherson was sixth with 115 points.
Madden scored a penalty point with two seconds left in the first period, adding an escape 10 seconds later. Madden added a takedown early in the third period to lock up the win.
Other medals went to Landon Frantz, who took third at 195; Mason Thrash, who took fourth at 220; Kourtney Craig, who took seventh at 182 pounds; and Devin Frantz, who took eighth at 160 pounds.
Landon Frantz continued his comeback at 195 pounds with pins over Josh Yorek of Burleson Centennial, Texas, in the consolation fourth round and Tyler Robinson of Leavenworth in the consolation quarterfinals.
In the consolation semifinals, Frantz pinned Konnor Tannahill of Horton in the third period. In the consolation finals, Frantz edged Tyler Allen of Derby 4-2.
Thrash at 220 pounds, claimed pins over Blaise Wood of Derby in the fourth consolation round and Mason Ross in the consolation quarterfinals to lock up a medal.
In the consolation semifinals, Thrash downed Whitney Hall of Emporia 6-3. In the consolation finals, Thrash fell to Andrew Davis of Washburn Rural 12-5.
At 182 pounds, Craig locked up a medal with a second-period pin of Gabe Smith of Seneca, Mo., in the fourth consolation round. Craig fell in the consolation quarterfinals to Blake Jouret of Olathe South 5-2.
In the seventh-place match, Craig pinned Brandon Vacura of Norton in the third period.
Devin Frantz clinched a medal at 160 pounds with a 4-2 win over Leavenworth’s Julien Bell in the fourth consolation round. In the consolation quarterfinals, he was edged 1-0 by Hunter Trail of Bishop Carroll.
In the seventh-place match, Frantz was edged 9-8 by Brent Escareno of Eureka.
At 120 pounds, Lorenzo Cruzen was eliminated in the fourth consolation round after an 11-3 major decision loss to Tyler Johnson of Olathe South. Cruzen finished the tourney 3-2.
At heavyweight, Jonah Scott was pinned in the second consolation round by Grant Durman of Seneca, Mo., in the the second period. Scott ends his tournament 2-2.
