Sandy Yianakopulos

Obituary

Sandy Yianakopulos departed this earthbound life for her spiritual journey on Monday, March 22, 2021.

She was born Sandra Rogene Winn on May 14, 1945, in Mobile, Alabama, to her parents, Paul “Bob” Robert Winn and Alice “Merle” (Thomas) Winn. Her family later moved to Winfield, Kansas, where her younger sister, Paula, joined the family. Sandy graduated from Winfield High School in 1963 and attended Cowley County Community College.

On August 21, 1964, Sandy walked the sanctuary aisle at the Winfield Free Methodist Church to wed Larry Lee Yianakopulos as her life partner. Their first home was in Winfield and then moved to New Orleans, where Larry Lee Yianakopulos, Jr. was born. Later, the family returned to Winfield, where sons Jimmy Dale and William Scott were born. The active family relocated permanently to McPherson, Kansas, when the boys were young.

During her career, Sandy worked in the offices for Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield, Central College and Alliance Insurance in McPherson, and Partners in Family Care in Moundridge, Kansas.

Sandy enjoyed participating in Women’s Aglow and the First Baptist Praise Team in McPherson. She was a fierce but friendly and fun competitor at card games, especially if it included her friend Sarah.

The greatest and proudest of Sandy’s accomplishments was raising three boys. No matter who or how many friends her boys brought home, there was always room at the family dinner table. She enjoyed cooking. Her sense of humor and easy-going laughter always put everyone at ease.

Camping, fishing, singing, playing cards, and her dogs were among her favorite activities. She was devoted to God, family, and the Kansas City Royals baseball team. What we admired about Sandy was her Christian walk with God, her daily devotion to reading the Bible, and her unconditional love.

Sandy succumbed to complications related to cancer treatment while at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Her parents, Bob and Merle Winn preceded Sandy in death in 2016. Sandy’s survivors are her husband, Larry Yianakopulos of McPherson, son Larry Lee Yianakopulos, spouse Debbie of Kansas City, son Jimmy Dale Yianakopulos of McPherson, son Scott Yianakopulos and spouse Lisa of Wichita, and her sister Paula Shearhart, spouse Jerry of McPherson. Grandchildren are Michael David, Jerry Dawn Parks, Lexi Kidd, Nicole Yianakopulos, Trenton Yianakopulos (deceased 2019), Maleah Yianakopulos, Christopher Lewis, Tommy Lewis, Abbey Yianakopulos, Sierra Burris, Jade Yianakopulos, Taygen Yianakopulos, and Alaina Yianakopulos. Sandy also has five great-grandchildren and too many friends to list.

A celebration of life and memorial service will be at McPherson First Baptist Church, on Saturday, April 10th at 1:00pm. The family requests flowers and cards be sent to McPherson First Baptist Church. Or the family requests contributions be made to McPherson First Baptist Church Youth Group in lieu of flowers.
