CANTON—While the Canton-Galva softball team may be hosting the Class 2-1A regionals, but being host did them no favors on Monday as Hillsboro scored a few runs early and then poured a few more runs across later to take a 12-2 victory over the Lady Eagles.
Hillsboro pushed three runs across in the first inning and held that lead until adding one more in the third to take a 4-0 lead before the Lady Eagles managed to knock across two runs of their own in the fourth to pull within a couple of runs heading into the fifth.
The fifth inning is when Hillsboro poured across six runs to take a commanding lead that they held onto for the 12-2 win over the Lady Eagles.
Canton-Galva was held to seven hits with all seven spread out among the seven Lady Eagles that had one hit each. Jenni Fitzpatrick had the lone run batted in, with Alexa Burch and Jayci Mastre scoring the only two runs of the game for the Lady Eagles.
Just solid pitching by Hillsboro was the key as Canton-Galva did not commit a single error in the game, but they did allow nine stolen bases by Hillsboro runners.
Ashton Brewer began the game on the mound for the Lady Eagles and gave up 14 hits, all 11 runs, while walking seven and getting just two outs by strikeouts.
