ELLSWORTH — The Smoky Valley High School girls tennis team is off to a fast start this season after dominating the Ellsworth Invitational on Tuesday.

All four Smoky Valley entries made the finals with Isabelle Wright winning the No. 2 singles draw and the duo of Rachel Yenni and Karik Elliott winning the No. 2 doubles draw.

However, head coach John Bellah knows his team can still improve.

“We had a good day today,” Bellah said. “I’m not satisfied, though; we can do better. I thought our two’s played well today. They made some nice strides from last week to today.”

At No. 1 singles, Kira Haxton ran into a buzzsaw in Central Plains star Emily Ryan. After breezing to the finals, Haxton fell to Ryan, 8-2, in the championship.

“Kira played well in the semis and the start of the finals but wasn’t able to sustain the level she was playing at,” Bellah said.

Morgan Bowles and Lana Clark made the finals at No. 1 doubles, but also fell 8-2 in the championship.

Bellah is confident his No. 1 singles and doubles will bounce back.

“Better days are ahead for them,” Bellah said. “We just didn’t compete in the finals for whatever reason.”

The Vikings won the tournament with 64 points. Second-place Ellsworth finished with 49.

Smoky Valley will host an eight-team team tournament on Sept. 6.
