MAIZE—After a tough loss against Valley Center High School in the first round of the annual Maize South Invitational last Tuesday, the McPherson High School boys soccer team bounced back with a 3-1 victory over Classical School of Wichita on Thursday.

"This game was a lot closer than it probably should have been," head coach Chris Adrian said. "We controlled the ball for the majority of the game and created lots of opportunities but struggled with our finishing. A lot of credit needs to go to the Wichita Classical goalie who made three saves on shots I thought were guaranteed goals."

The Bullpups, just like their last game, were trailing behind 1-0 after Wichita Classical scored off a set play. However, after the first goal, the Bullpups started to kick it to high gear. Tyler Hoxie was able to give the Bullpups their first goal of the day to tie the game up.

"After giving up the goal, the boys found another gear and started to play with more urgency," Adrian said. "We won a penalty after a handball in the box and Tyler Hoxie stepped up and buried it to tie the game. "

The Bullpups recorded 15 shots on goal against the Saints. Most came in the second half. McPherson regained the lead after Cody Achilles scored directly off a corner kick. He would then get an assist on Jael Jaimie's goal to give the Bullpups a 3-1 cushion. Adrian believed Achilles put on an outstanding performance for McPherson and believed the Bulllpups showed more dominance in the first half.

"Cody Achilles played his best game of the season and scored an amazing goal directly off a corner kick to give the team the lead in the second half," Adrian said. "He then provided the assist on Jael Jaime’s goal which killed the game. Samy Jaime also had a great game and was a constant threat on the outside of the field. Britton Haigh and Drew Schrader worked their tails off all over the field and even though they didn’t score or assist on any goals, they created so man chances."

As the Bullpups continue to fight for fifth place in the invitational, they will return to Maize as they will face Thomas Moore Prep-Marion on Saturday Sept.8 at 12 p.m.
