BUHLER—It was a very good night for the McPherson High School volleyball team on Tuesday as they traveled south to Buhler for a triangular and came home with two victories against El Dorado and host Buhler.

"We played really well on Tuesday night and no evidence of our last Tuesday evening match on the road," head coach Christy Doile said.

The Lady Bullpup spikers rolled past El Dorado in the first match, winning in straight sets (25-11, 25-9) before finishing out the day by taking another straight win (25-20, 25-19) in a hard fought, tight battle with Buhler.

Several Lady Bullpups had strong matches with Cassie Cooks and Rhian Swanson leading the way in kills with 16 and 12 respectively, while Michaela Bowers accounted for 15 digs with Jaycee Burghart and Meghan Smith each digging for nine each.

"We tried a new line-up last  night having Cassie and Rhian opposite of each other," Doile said. "I was extremely proud of the way the girls handled the shuffle. We seemed to flow really well.  Props to Smith moving to the middle and Jost to right side.  Jost had a good hitting night on the right side."

Burghart once again had her normally strong, efficient day by getting credit for 38 assists and scoring two aces. Kallie Jost also scored two aces, while also getting a couple of blocks along with Cooks who two as well. Katie Berg led McPherson in blocks with three.

"Our receive had a nice nice as well, with all receivers over a 2.0 rating. We dominated Eldorado," Doile said. "We jumped out to early leads in both sets vs Buhler.  We did let up in both sets a bit and turned it back on to finish the set."

In the junior varsity matches the results were the same, with the JV spikers gaining a straight set (25-12, 25-20) win over El Dorado before having to go three sets against Buhler before scoring a victory (15-25, 25-21, 25-19).

In the junior varsity matches, Coach Melissa Bradshaw noted, “Our team had incredible serving runs against El Dorado, including seven aces on the match lead by Ella Schmid with four and Megan Lulloff with two. It really took them out of system, especially in the first set.”

As for the match with host Buhler, Coach Bradshaw concluded her coach reflections by saying, “Having lost to Buhler earlier this season, our girls were determined to win tonight. We knew it wouldn’t be easy to do on their home court, but I’m really proud of the way they fought back from a first set loss and came together. We always talk to our team about our core values, they knew what they needed to do and held each other accountable. Lauren Labertew, Ella Schmid and Megan Lulloff brought everyone together after the first set and fired them up. It was a great overall effort.”

While the Lady Bullpup junior varsity spikers will be at Salina South on Saturday for the AVCTL JV Invitational, the varsity girls will have a week off before heading to Mulvane on Tuesday, Oct.16 to close out their regular season with a triangular against Mulvane and Wellington before playing in sub-state on Saturday, Oct. 20.
