HUTCHINSON—The weekend before Thanksgiving, the McPherson Aqua Pups Swim Club team sent 15 swimmers to Hutchinson for the Hutchinson YMCA Swim Club’s ‘Seahawk Classic’ and came home with four individual gold medal winners and one relay gold, including a double gold for Taylin Thompson.
Thompson took first in both the 25 Breaststroke and 25 Backstroke of the age division, while Hazel Wuertz finished first in the 50 Backstroke in her age bracket. Also gaining a first place finish was Quinn Liebl in the 8-under 50 Freestyle while the quartet of Hazel Wuertz, Gracy Hubbard, Adyson Wiens and Bree Pickerell took first in the 12-under 200 Freestyle Relay. .
“It was a great turnout and great all-around meet for us,” Aqua Pups Head Coach Kyle Banman noted. “This was the most swimmers that we’ve had at a meet so far this season with 15 competing, including two participating in their first ever meet.”
The two first time meet swimmers were Jayce Jennings and Bennet Rank, both participating in the 8-year old division. Both swimmers swam in the 25 Freestyle and the 25 Backstroke, with Jayce taking fifth in both events while Bennet finished seventh in both.
Other swimming highlights for the Aqua Pups at the Hutchinson ‘Seahawk Classic” were:
Gracy Hubbard (11) went six for six on best times, including a 17 second cut on the 50 Backstroke while getting top finishes of sixth in both the 50 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke plus a seventh-place in the 100 Freestyle.
Quinn Liebl (8) competed in her first short course meet and took first in the 8-under 50 Freestyle. Quinn also placed fourth in the 25 Freestyle and seventh in the 25 Backstroke.
Luke Lockhart (11) had a 10-second cut in his time for the 50 Backstroke.
Sam Madden (10) had a huge 20.57 second drop in his 50 Freestyle while taking seventh in the event. Sam also placed sixth in the 50 Backstroke and eighth in the 50 Butterfly.
Danae Paine (10) swam her first short course meet, swimming in the 100 Freestyle, 50 Butterfly and 50 Backstroke.
Bree Pickerell (11) placed fourth in the 50 Backstroke, sixth in the 100 Freestyle and eighth in the 50 Butterfly.
Layla Rank (10) took on the 50 Butterfly for the first time and place ninth.
Olivia Smolik (11) cut a whopping 15.33 seconds on her 100 Freestyle while also placing ninth in the 100 Breaststroke.
Taylin Thompson (7) took first in both the 25 Breaststroke and 25 Backstroke, while also gaining second in the 25 Butterfly and third in the 25 Freestyle.
Taytum Thompson (7) finished second in the 25 Freestyle and sixth in the 25 Backstroke.
Adyson Wiens (11) went six-for-six on best/new times, including a massive 20.17 second cut in the 50 Butterfly. She also placed fifth in the 100 Butterfly and eighth in both he 50 Backstroke and 50 Freestyle.
Hazel Wuertz (10) took first in the 50 Backstroke, second in the 100 Freestyle, and fourth in the 50 Butterfly.
Emmy Yeakel-Becker (7) took fourth in the 25 Backstroke and seventh in the 25 Freestyle.
The quartet of Hazel Wuertz, Gracy Hubbard, Adyson Wiens and Bree Pickerell took first in the 12-under 200 Freestyle Relay.
The group of Taylin and Taytum Thompson, Quinn Liebl, and Emmy Yeakel-Becker took second in the 12-under 200 Freestyle Relay.
Next up for the McPherson Aqua Pups will be on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1 and 2, when they swim at the Winter Qualifier in Wichita, hosted by the Wichita Swim Club.
