Last season was a pretty solid year for the McPherson High School wrestling team as they finished first in AVCTL Division III with a 5-0 mark, placed third as a team at regionals and then capped off the season with a seventh-place finish at the state wrestling tournament, a finish that included a state individual champion and a state runner-up.

Doug Kretzer enters his eighth season as the Bullpup wrestling Head Coach and has compiled a pretty solid reputation throughout the state for the program he runs and the 2018-19 season should be much the same – very successful.

“We have an experienced team with very good depth,” noted Coach Kretzer. “Hopefully we can build on our strong season from last year.”

Among the nine returning varsity wrestlers will be two who made huge marks at the state tournament last season, including top returnee, junior Rhett Edmonson who not only won the state title at 120 but finished the season with just three losses behind 35 wins. Scott Radke will try hard to finish his senior season this year with the same numbers as last year when he finished 40-4 overall at 152 while he also works at getting that state title he just missed last season when he placed second.

Coach Kretzer must feel blessed as he will also be returning three juniors who qualified to wrestle at the state tournament last season, including Landon Crew who finished with a 30-15 record last year at 106, Jonah Clarke who wrestles at 145 and was 26-15, and Kourtney Craig at 220. Other returning leaders on the mat that Coach Kretzer can count on will be seniors EJ Kretzer and Mya Kretzer, plus junior Mason Thrash at 170 and Wayne Hitt at 285. Mya Kretzer also has the distinction of not only being one of the top female wrestlers in Kansas, but in the nation.
