Who would ever think Elyria Christian School boys basketball team would go from a 14-0 start to finishing the regular season 21-2 to be a runner-up at the Class 1A DII state championship last season? Another question will be, can they bring the magic twice in a row, and this time win it all? That's what the Eagles' head coach Zach Goodrich is leaning toward to this year with a veteran group, but it won't come easy.
"We have to do a lot of little things well. I believe practice will help us do those things," Goodrich said. "If we are consistent, and build each day I think we will have a chance to be solid."
The Eagles have their big own big three returning for Elyria. Leading the trio is their top scorer Aidan Fields. Fields averaged 10.8 points-per-game and shot 49.2 percent from the perimeter. Caleb Froese, who had a breakout junior season, is also part of the senior trio who will put up numbers for the Eagles. Their third option is their 3-point threat Tyler Huxman, who shot 42.4 percent from behind the arc.
"Returning a good group of seniors will be helpful, and playing under the same system for a third year should be beneficial," Goodrich said. "1A will have some fantastic teams but we are looking forward to the challenge."
Elyria is expecting this season will not be a walk in the park. Goodrich sees the emergence of some teams that the Eagles will face this season that could give them the run for their money.
"The league will be competitive this season. I believe Little River has a solid core returning, Jayden Garrison and Graham Stephens will have a year of high school basketball experience under their belt,"Goodrich said. "Solomon will be athletic and will be able to pressure in the full-court. Rural Vista is returning great size that will be a handful night in and night out. Canton-Galva's young team has another year of experience and has a solid freshmen class that will make them a tough out. There should be some great games throughout league play."
The Eagles will take on Moundridge High School on Friday Nov.30. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m.
