INMAN — With four returning starters, six returning lettermen, and two varsity newcomers, the Inman High School girls basketball team should be improved from last year’s team that went 14-10 and made the state tournament.
“Returning 10 letter winners and adding a strong freshman class has given us great depth at every position,” head coach Bill Maurer said. “It will make for very competitive practices. The girls have a lot of confidence after last season and it was special for their hard work to payoff with a trip to the state tournament.”
The Teutons are led by two Heart of America All League Honorable Mentions in senior Olivia Clark and senior Macy DeWitt.
Clark, a 5-foot-10 forward, averaged nine points and five rebounds a game last season.
“Olivia had a breakout season last year and we expect her to increase both her scoring and rebounding averages from last season,” Maurer said.
Clark is complemented by DeWitt, the team’s point guard, who averaged seven points, five assists, and six rebounds a game.
“Macy will be relied on heavily to make our offense go,” Maurer said. “Macy is a four-year starter and will bring tremendous experience and toughness to the court.”
The Teutons return two upperclassmen starters in junior Lauren Maurer and senior Kamryn Herren.
Coach Maurer has high praise for both standouts.
“Kamryn was a key player in our run to the state tournament last year; her athleticism and offensive rebounding were huge for us last year, especially in the sub-state,” Maurer said. “Lauren was our most consistent perimeter last season, and we look for her to continue that in 2018-2019.”
With six lettermen on the bench and two newcomers Maurer believes can make a difference, the Teutons will contend for back-to-back sub-state championships.
“This year’s team is ready to deal with the expectations that come from last year’s success and I am excited to watch them compete,” Maurer said. “Our expectations are to compete every night and strive to be successful every day in practice.”
