Elyria Christian School girls basketball finished 12-9 last year and came up short to make it to the sub-state finals after losing to Central Christian High School in the semis. The Lady Eagles lost four of their starters including their leading scorer Bailey Unruh. Now Elyria is back to square one in head coach Greg Fields' sixth season.
"The 2018-19 season will definitely be a year of transition. Several of last years seniors had been the backbone of our team the past couple of seasons,"Fields said. "We graduated out a lot of size and 80% of our scoring. I’m looking forward to seeing who will step up this season to not only fill the scoring gap, but to also provide solid leadership for the team."
Makenzie Archer and Anna Shultz are the only two returning starters for Lady Eagles. Brekken Anderson, another senior, Tili Burton, and Claire Adamyk also are back for Elyria as they are expecting to be role players for the Eagles. Each will have a shot to compete for more minutes this season.
"These incoming freshmen have learned how to win, and I’m sure that they will not only push our older girls in practice, but some of them will probably get some varsity experience this year," Fields said. "Even though we have lost a lot of height this season, we will be a lot quicker and more athletic. I believe that we will be able to do a lot of different things defensively because of our speed."
Fields also brought in long-time coach Ben Starburg to the coaching staff as his assistant. Starsburg has been coaching incoming freshmen when they had a successful season in the 8th-grade Wheat State League.
"I’m excited about having Ben Starburg join me as the assistant coach this year," Fields said. "He brings a lot of experience, and I know that he will provide some new energy in practice."
The Lady Eagles will host Moundridge High School on Nov.30 at 6 p.m.
