LITTLE RIVER—Last season the Little River girls basketball team placed second in the Wheat State League with an 8-1 record while also placing second at sub-state to finish the season 15-8 overall.

In 2018-19 the Lady Redskins look to move everything up a notch with a goal of winning the league and qualifying for a state tournament bid.

Now beginning his fourth season as head coach, Trey Look, has a bunch of players coming back, including several now juniors who were forced to play a lot last year due to injuries.

“Coming in to the season we will have high expectations,” Coach Look noted. “I think we realize what it will take to make that next step after getting second in both the league and sub-state. Due to several injuries last year we had a lot of girls step up at the varsity level. With that experience coming back, some new players and the freshman coming in, I look for this team to come into the season prepared and ready to compete. This team has great chemistry and we’ll use that to get after some teams as our keys this season will being more aggressive on offense and controlling the boards at both ends.”

Among the returnees will be seniors Madison and Michelle Loder plus Jacie Porter, along with juniors Emma McBride, Jaylie Bergkamp, Morgan Konen, MacKinze Barta, Emma Wright, Riley Bruce and Danielle Gadberry. McBride will be the leading returnee for scoring as she averaged 9.3 points per game last season. Bruce is the tallest returnee at five-foot-ten, while Konen and Barta are both five-foot-nine. Look will also look to work into the lineup senior transfer Kaylie Zimmerman.

“The Wheat State League will be tough again this year with a lot of teams returning most of their players,” concluded Coach Look in his season preview reflections. “I believe if we can stay healthy, that we will improve on last year’s success and reach the ultimate goal of going to state.”

The Lady Redskins will open the 2018-19 season on Friday, Nov. 30, at home against Lincoln.
