The McPherson Middle School seventh and eighth-grade girls basketball teams kicked off the post-Thanksgiving part of the schedule on Tuesday with games against Manhattan Eisenhower. 8th Grade Lady Pups take two wins from Manhattan Eisenhower

MANHATTAN—The McPherson Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team had a successful first game back from the holiday break as both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams scored wins over Manhattan Eisenhower on Tuesday.

It was victory number one on the season for the ‘A’ team when they scored a 27-15 win while being led by Kelcie Kynaston on the offense end with 12 points. Holding their own on the boards, the Lady Pups were led by Alexis Dukes and Carsen Berger who pulled down five and four rebounds respectively. Dukes also made five steals on defense.

“The girls got their first win as eighth-graders,” Head Coach TJ Jackson noted. “Very proud of the improvement they have shown and their ability to keep working hard even when things don’t go right. Multiple times we had mistakes that happen, but the girls didn’t hang their head, instead they got right back into it. No matter our record at the end of the season, their attitude and work ethic being great is what matters most. I look forward to seeing a lot of improvement and growth as we head into the Christmas break.”

The eighth-grade girls ‘B’ team also scored their first win of the season on Tuesday with their 21-5 victory over Manhattan Eisenhower. While no Lady Pups hit for double digits in the scorebook, six put at least two beside their name led by Emily Heskett with five points.

“I’m so proud of our ladies for getting their first win of the season,” commented ‘B’ team coach Ellie Wingert. “Our set offense was a struggle tonight as we were outsized inside, but our ladies continued to fight through. They played very aggressive on defense, which led to turnovers that we were able to take advantage of for scoring. I was excited to see these girls turn the page tonight and I’m ready to see them build off this performance in Hutchinson on Thursday.”

The eighth-grade girls will play at Hutchinson on Thursday.

7th Grade Lady Pups split pair with Manhattan Eisenhower

MANHATTAN—It was a long ride for the first game on the schedule after the Thanksgiving break, but the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade girls basketball teams did their best and came home with a split of two games at Manhattan Eisenhower.

In the ‘A’ game, the Lady Pups scored a convincing 44-12 victory with a strong second half as the halftime score was but 13-4. While nine players put points in the scorebook, Karter Alvord led the team by pouring in 16.

“After a long bus ride, we started out pretty slow,” said Head Coach Kaleigh Huxman. “The score at halftime was just 13-4, but in the second half we went to a full court man which really sparked us on both ends of the floor. We had nine players score for us tonight in another solid team win.”

For the seventh-grade ‘B’ game, only four girls made the score book as they took a 22-11 defeat at the hands of host Manhattan Eisenhower.

“Tonight was a much better game offensively for the ‘B’ team,” noted Coach Huxman. “We were aggressive to the basket and not afraid to take open shots. We still have a lot of work to do on the defensive end, but I am really proud of the effort and passion the girls played with tonight.”

The seventh-grade Lady Pups were scheduled to play at Hutchinson on Thursday.
