CANTON—It’s a new season for the Canton-Galva girls basketball team and with it comes a new excitement as Shelby Hoppes takes over as the head coach for the Lady Eagles, and if he can do for the basketball team what he has done for the Eagle football team, then the fun has just begun.

The Lady Eagles stumbled to a 9-12 mark in 2017-18, but lose just one senior from that squad in Taylor Everett, while returning six quality girls to begin the Hoppes tenure.

Three of the returnees were starters last season, including senior Kaysha Unruh and juniors Tia Moddlemog and Jayci Mastre. Two juniors, Braylee Doughman and Carissa Klatt plus sophomore Alexa Bell are letter winners who will also compete for playing time as the Lady Eagles look to turn their fortunes around.

Everyone knows that Coach Hoppes has worked wonders with the Eagle football program, leading them all the way to the state semifinals this fall, but the question will be – can he do the same for the Lady Eagle basketball program?

“With this being my first year as the head coach for the Canton-Galva girl’s basketball team, there are a lot of unknowns for the upcoming season,” said Coach Hoppes in his reflections on the upcoming 2018-19 season. “It will also be my first year as a basketball coach. We do have a lot of returning experience at multiple positions on the floor. We also have good leadership on the floor with the returning upperclassmen. I am expecting a very competitive season.”

The Lady Eagles will open their 2018-19 season on Friday, Nov. 30 when they host Rural Vista.
