LINDSBORG—For two straight seasons, the Smoky Valley High School boys basketball team has finished third in Central Kansas League after finishing 14-8 last year. Head coach Doug Schneider is looking forward to a new group of talents he will be coaching for the Vikings.

The Vikings will have to count on new scorers this season after the departure of Brett Heitschmidt, Nick Reinert, Ben Weldy, and Jacob Adams. That is losing almost 85 percent of their score leaders according to Schneider.

Schneider expects his seniors Lane Schrag and Carson Windholz to step up as the two guards. Both provide quickness and could play a factor defensively.

"The two of them have demonstrated an ability to harass other players and force turnovers," Schneider said. "It is going to be necessary for new players to step into scoring roles and those roles may come from many different sources. With this team the challenge will be determining where that scoring may come from and how that scoring may change from night to night."

The Vikings will rely on upon their 3-point threat Cole Brumbaugh, who shot 34 percent from behind the arc last season. Blake Heble and Konrad Peterson and Chris Mullen provide size and will lead the frontcourt for Smoky Valley.

"These three will create a number of mismatches as Mullen comes in at 6’5 while Heble and Peterson are both 6’1 but very strong and quick," Schneider said.

Schneider believes their defense will be the strength for the Vikings. Despite lacking size, the Vikings are strong enough and quick enough create pressure against opponents.

"This team will look to force steals and create offense off of those steals more so than some past Vikings teams," Schneider. said.

The Vikings will have their home opener on Nov.30 as they host Abilene High School. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m.
