MOUNDRIDGE — Replacing Bethany Stucky will be no easy task, but the Moundridge High School girls basketball team still returns the bulk of its squad to be more than competitive this season.

Kassidy Kaufman, who tied with Stucky for the team’s lead in rebounds per game at six, is also gone, meaning the Wildcats do have holes to fill.

Fortunately, the Wildcats return three starters and seven lettermen and should be tough as always in the Heart of America League.

“Playing in a tough league prepares us for the postseason,” head coach Brian Holloway said. “This year’s team has a chance to be on of the best in a while.”

Because the Wildcats lose their top two rebounders and have only one player over 5 foot 9, Moundridge will be more guard-orientated this season.

“Our perimeter players will be asked to lead us a little more this year,” Holloway said.

Ellen Durst and Kaela Helms will be the primary ball handlers for Moundridge. Both seniors are quick, which Holloway believes will be a team strength in general.

Durst averaged four assists and five steals per game, while Helms was good for six points a game. If both can increase their scoring, they will form a formidable backcourt duo.

Keira Sebrant will be the primary replacement for Stucky, but the senior will have junior Hailey Unruh and sophomore Kourtney Kaufman for support. Kaufman, who averaged seven points and four rebounds a game as a freshman, could be due for a breakout season in year two.

“We have smart players with high basketball IQs,” Holloway said. “I look for them to be great teammates on and off the court.”

The Wildcats will host Elyria Christian School on Nov. 30.
