LINDSBORG—A new head coach is taking over for the Smoky Valley High School girls basketball team, and his name is Larry Van Der Weg. It's a new beginning with a new coaching staff. At least Van Der Weg will rely on his four returning seniors. Leading the Lady Vikings are the Haxton Sisters of Kira and Kerington. Both combined of 8.4 points game. Also returning is their big player Bri Franklin, who provides size at 6-foot for Smoky Valley. Van Der Weg is looking forward to coach a veteran group in his first year.

"As a first year coach and new coaching staff, there will be a learning curve for all of us (coaches and players), as we get to know each other and how we want to play," Van Der Weg said. "We are blessed with having a team with talent returning, including senior leadership. If we can improve throughout the year, we should be pretty competitive by the end of February."

Some are capable of making to state this year according to the head coach. Regardless he's up for the challenge and is looking forward to seeing the progression of his Lady Vikings this season.
" I don’t know details about each team in the Central Kansas League, but I do know that every year there typically are multiple teams that qualify for the state tournament.  I wouldn’t expect this year to be any different."

Smoky Valley' s home opener will be against Abilene High School on Nov.30 at 6 p.m.
