TOPEKA—It was a gold type of day on Tuesday for the McPherson High School boys swimming team as they earned four individual gold medals and one relay gold while placing second in the team standings on the road at the 13-team Topeka Hayden Invitational.

The day could not have started out much better for the Bullpups as they took first-place in four of the first five events as both William Powers and Justus Hampton scored double gold on the day as Powers won both the 200-freestyle and 100-backstroke, while Hampton swam first in the 200 individual medley and the 100-butterfly. Also earning a gold for first-place was the Bullpups 200 medley relay ‘A’ quartet of William Powers, Hampton, Dawson Van Goethem and Zach LeBlanc in the first event of the meet.

Dawson Van Goethem earned a second-place finish in the 50-freestyle, while the 400-freestyle relay team of Van Goethem, Hampton, Silas Steinert and William Powers also swam to a second-place finish in the final event of the day.

In the team standings, as good a day McPherson had, powerhouse Blue Valley West of Class 6A had more overall talent and depth which enabled them to outdistance the Bullpups 476 to 378 for the team title. McPherson won their first meet of the season last week at Maize.

“Well it took a top five Class 6A school to give us a taste of our own medicine,” noted Bullpup Head Coach Matt Morrow. “Blue Valley West took top honors and while the Pups swam great, Blue Valley West was deeper and just as talented. They were putting three swimmers in the final heat of almost every race and that was just too much for us to overcome.”

“We started off strong taking gold in the first event,” added Coach Morrow. “Then William (Powers) followed that up with another first in the 200 freestyle, then Justus (Hampton) almost broke William’s school record in the 200-individual medley by taking first in the third event of the evening. Justus followed up with another first in the butterfly.”

Coach Morrow concluded his reflections of the meet by saying, “We were disappointed that we didn’t win the meet, but I’m as proud of this performance as the win last Saturday. These guys are getting noticed around the state now and they believe that every time they dive in the pool that we can win. Wish our home crowd could see them race, it’s fun to see.”

Next up for the Bullpup boys swim team will be on Monday, December 10 when they travel to Haysville.
