On Monday the McPherson Middle School seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams played host to Newton. With the eighth grade Lady Pups playing just one game they scored a victory, while the seventh-grade girls split a pair with the Railers.
8th grade girls lose to Newton
It was a roller coaster kind of game for the McPherson Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball ‘A’ team as they dropped home game on Monday to Newton, 30-23. There was no ‘B’ game.
Kyla Lang was the lone Lady Pup to make double figures in the scorebook as she hit for 11, only four girls scored for McPherson in the game.
“So many ups and down in one game,” noted Head Coach TJ Jackson. “It is easy to forget what the score is sometimes when you see these girls playing this hard. Even with the game in a very tough position at the end, they fought hard and gave us a couple of more chances to score. We showed some good things with a couple of new pieces, and we still need to improve our man whether it be full court or half court. This week is a good one for us to get a few practices in to clean up a few things and then it will be exciting to get back at it again next week.”
The girls will have a week off to rest and practice before returning to the court on Monday, Dec. 10 at Hutchinson.
7th grade girls split with Newton
It was a tale of two games for the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade girls basketball teams as the ‘A’ rolled over Newton at home on Monday while Newton returned the act by taking a commanding victory over the ‘B’ team.
The seventh-grade Lady Pups ‘A’ team used a balanced offense to roll past Newton 31-10 as seven girls put points on the board with Karter Alvord leading the way with nine.
“We had a tough time getting started tonight,” noted seventh-grade Lady Pup Head Coach Kaleigh Huxman when reflecting on the ‘A’ game. “We kept getting great looks but just couldn’t finish. I am proud of the girls for battling on the defensive end and we did a much better job of playing without fouling. Going forward, we talked about the need to play with more intensity and make use of communication.”
In the seventh-grade Lady Pups ‘B’ game the game was just the opposite as Newton shut down McPherson and took home a 38-15 victory.
Only three Lady Pups scored in the game with Jayla McLeod taking the bulk of the scoring by hitting double digits with 10.
Concluding her day’s reflections with the ‘B’ game, Coach Huxman added, “Newton’s size was a big factor in the game tonight. We struggled to get to the basket and to get rebounds. Once again I am extremely proud of this group for the effort they put forth tonight.”
With a week off to rest and clean up their game, the seventh-grade Lady Pups will be back on the court on Monday, Dec. 10 when they travel to Hutchinson.
