NEWTON — The McPherson High School wrestling team got its hair messed up a little over the weekend at the 55th Newton Invitational Tournament of Champions.

Two Bullpups fell from the ranks of the unbeaten during the weekend. McPherson still finished the weekend with four medals and an eighth-place team finish.

“We know when we come to the Newton Tournament of Champions you are going to run into someone with the potential to beat you, no matter what the level is,” McPherson coach Doug Kretzer said. “We want to get out there and face tough competition. We relish the ability to wrestle the best in the state. That’s where we’re going to find out what we need to work on and where we need to improve. We will win four medals and finish in the top 10. We were hoping to crack the top five. We had a rough couple rounds out of the gate this morning. You have to wrestle a complete match. You have to wrestle for six minutes.”

Scott Radke finished second at 160 pounds to lead McPherson, falling to top-ranked (Class 6A) Bubba Wilson of Manhattan.

Radke gave up an escape and a takedown in the second period. He scored an escape early in the third, but gave up a late takedown in a 5-1 decision.

At 138 pounds, Rhett Edmonson rebounded from his first loss of the year by edging Garrett Edwards of Dodge City 3-0 in the consolation semifinals. In the consolation finals, Edmonson scored a 9-1 major decision over Brennan Lowe of Eureka.

At heavyweight, Alex Perkins won his first two matches of the day. Perkins dropped a 16-5 major decision to Tony Caldwell of Valley Center in the consolation semifinals and pinned David Huckstep of Washburn Rural in 72 seconds in the fifth-place match.

At 220 pounds, Kourtney Craig won his first two matches of the day. Craig was pinned by Josh Carter of Wichita Northwest 2:36 in the consolation semifinals and was pinned by Trenton Willert of Goddard in 31 seconds in the fifth-place match.

Jonah Clark (170), Landon Frantz (182) and Mason Thrash (195) all lost in the fourth consolation round, one win shy of a medal.

Lorenzo Cruzen (113), Mya Kretzer (120), Landon Crews (126), Collin Pearson (132), Neil Raymond and Jonah Scott (extra entry, HWT) all lost in the third consolation round.

McPherson wrestles Friday and Saturday at the Hays Prairie Classic.

“We need to stay healthy,” Kretzer said. “We need to continue to work hard every day in practice. We have a couple more tough tournaments, two-day tournaments. We need to work hard to make the top eight (at regionals) and get in the state tournament. You get on the bracket at state and you have a chance.”
