FORT WORTH, TX—The Bethany softball team kicked off their 2019 campaign on Friday with two games in the opening day of the NAIA Cowtown Classic. The Swedes fell 9-3 to Our Lady of the Lake University before losing a heart breaker 6-5 to (RV) Lyon College.
OLLU – 9, BTHY – 3
The Saints started this one out strong taking an early five-run lead in the top of the first inning. The Swedes were able to answer then in the bottom of the second inning. Alexandra Medina, junior outfielder, reached on an OLLU errors before moving to third on Ciera Flores's, sophomore infielder, double. The pair then scored on a Millenni Lucero, freshman outfielder, single to the left side. The Saints added two more in their number in the top of the fourth, before the Swedes put one across in the bottom half of the inning. Alexis Martinez, junior outfielder, walked her way on base before a double by Shannon Williams, junior pinch hitter, put her on three. An error by OLLU then put Lucero on and scored Martinez. However, while the Saints would put up two more in the top of the fifth innings, that would be all she wrote for Swedes' scoring.
Cassi Clouse, junior pitcher, suffered the loss for the team allowing four hits in two-thirds of an inning. Ashley Nava, junior pitcher, came in to throw four and one-third innings. During this time, she allowed seven hits and struck out four batters. Kaitlyn Wagner, junior pitcher, came in to close things out. In her two innings of work, the junior allowed no hits.
Offensively, five Swedes recorded hits with Martinez and Williams adding doubles to their line.
Lyon – 6, BTHY – 5
The Swedes were the ones who got out to an early start in this one, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Williams got on base with a walk before Flores singled her over. A double by Hannah Seals, freshman infielder, brought in Williams and put Flores on third. Flores then scores on a single by Martinez. Bethany added another run in the bottom of the third when Flores singled to the left side before moving around and scoring on a slew of Lyon errors. The Scots scored their first run in the top of the fourth but then added five to it in the top of the fifth inning. Bethany was able to answer with one in the bottom of the fifth, again starting with a Flores single through the left side. A pair of singles by Elizabeth Endsley, senior pinch hitter, and Lexie Valentine, senior infielder, then scored Flores. However, the Swedes would not be able to make the magic happen in the final two innings of the game falling by a single run.
Lauren Quintana, junior pitcher, suffered the loss. In her four and two-thirds innings she allowed four hits and struck out six batters. Nava again came in relief for the final two and one-third innings. She allowed two hits during this time.
On the offensive side of the ball, Bethany's Flores and Valentine each when 3-for-4 to lead the team.

The Swedes return to play tomorrow for the final games of the Cowtown Classic. Bethany faces No. 1 Oklahoma City at 10 a.m. before facing off with LSU-Alexandria at 2 p.m.
