There were 220 high school girl wrestlers all competed at the Roundhouse for the third annual girls wrestling state tournament on Saturday. Third time being the charm, McPherson High School wrestling head coach Doug Kretzer hope it convinces KSHSAA to make it an official Kansas State High School State Championship.

"The future is bright for girls in Kansas who want to wrestle at the high school level," Kretzer said. "Hopefully they are all wrestling for post season accolades from KSHSAA.

For the third year in a row, the McPherson girls wrestlers got the team win despite trailing for most of the tournament to Fort Scott High School. The Bullpups found a way to pull through in the end with the final score of 113. Fort Scott finished second with 110. Spring Hill (92), (Great Bend), and Emporia (61) finished in the top five behind McPherson and For Scott.

"It was a tremendous event. Our girls had some struggles early, but we really came on strong in the end," Kretzer said. "We were behind Fort Scott for most of the day, but in the last two rounds our girls dug deep and we found a way to pull off the team championship.  Every girl on the team played a part."

Mya Kretzer led McPherson as she went 5-0 and claiming the state title at 126. Four of her wins were by pinfall. She defeated Maritza Jimenez of Hutchinson High School in the championship round.

Eight wrestlers medaled for McPherson. Both Haley Schafer, at 138, and Sailor Peterson at 152 B finished as the state-runners-up. Kaleigh Marbut at 120 and Holi Giddings, at 152, finished third in their weight class.

Mya had a great day to cap of a tremendous high school career.  Haley Schafer, Kaleigh Marbut, and Holli Giddings had a really good day as well,"Coach Kretzer said. "I’m proud of Sailor Peterson and Brittani Burgess to come away with a medal in the B brackets as well."
