PARK CITY— It's championship weekend for the McPherson High School wrestling team. Seven grapplers will head down to the Hartman Arena in Park City to take on the top wrestlers in the Class 5A State Tournament

This year will be McPherson's first state tournament in seven years as a 5A team. The competition level is at an all-time high with schools such as Arkansas City, Goddard, Maize, and plenty of Wichita and Kansas City schools to go around, but there is no intimidation from head coach Doug Kretzer.

"At the state tournament, all match ups are tough. Every time we step on the mat, I expect a battle," Kretzer said."

A matchup to watch is in the 160-pound weight class. That's where you will see Scott Radke and Trevor Dopps of Goddard High School and No.1 wrestler in class 5A. The last time the two, faced off, was during the regionals when Radke lost to Dopp in a tiebreaker. There's a good chance both will meet again in the finals. There could be some adjustments made after their bout.

"I think he wrestled well in the regional finals, a couple of adjustment would be to get his offense going a little sooner and finish on his takedowns," Kretzer said. "He needs to take each match one at a time and not overlook anyone in the bracket."

Also competing at state will be Landon Crews at 126, Jonah Clarke at 170, Landon Frantz at 182, Mason Thrash at 195, Kourtney Craig at 220 and Alex Perkins at 285. Perkins is in the same weight class as Oklahoma football commit Marcus Hick of Wichita Northwest High School.

Kretzer is looking forward to seeing what all seven of his wrestlers could against a heavy competition this weekend.

"This is another opportunity to wrestle," Kretzer said. "Speaking for both my wrestlers and I, we love the sport and are thankful for the opportunity to compete in it.  It’s going to be a great event, can’t wait for Friday."
