BARTLESVILLE, OK—The Swedes softball team picked up a split in their conference opening series against Oklahoma Wesleyan University. Bethany fell in the first game, 11-6 before picking up a 4-0 win in the game two.
OKWU – 11, BTHY – 6
The Eagles kicked things off with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. They added three more in the third, and one in the fourth before the Swedes got things going with five in the top of the fifth inning.
Briana Rodriguez, freshman pinch hitter, reached on a walk before Rayleen Castro, sophomore pinch hitter, came in to single up the middle, moving Rodriguez to second. Millenni Lucero, freshman pinch runner, then came in to race on the base paths for Castro. Courtney Fudge, senior infielder, then singled to center to score Rodriguez. Emma Wager, junior designated player, then walked her way on to load up the bases. Ciera Flores, sophomore infielder, then walked to score Lucero. Tannah Colson's, freshman outfielder, ground ball caused Fudge to get out but an Eagle error then scored Wager. Flores and Colson were then able to move to third and second on the error. Alexandra Medina, junior pinch runner, then came in to take on the base paths for Colson. Finally, Alexis Martinez, junior outfielder, doubled to right field to score Flores and Medina.
OKWU added two more to their total in the bottom of the sixth. The Swedes were able to add one more run in the top of the seventh inning. Fudge was hit by a pitch before being forced out on a Wager ground ball. Flores then singled to left to move Wager to second. A Martinez single to center then scored Wager. However, this would be all the Swedes could rally, falling in the contest 11-6.
Martinez was the lone Swede with multiple hits going 2-for-3 in the contest with three runs batted in. Five other Swedes notched hits in the contest.
A trio of Swedes worked from the circle in this contest. Cassi Clouse, junior pitcher, started things off throwing one-third of an inning, taking the loss. She was followed by Ashley Nava, junior pitcher, who threw two complete innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits during that time. Finally, Kaitlyn Wagner, junior pitcher, finished things out. During this time, she allowed three earned runs on eight hits.
BTHY – 4, OKWU – 0
The Swedes started things off in the in the top of the third scoring one run. Tori Quintana, freshman outfielder, singled to center before Fudge singled to right moving Quintana into scoring position. A bobble by the Eagles then scored Quintana.
Bethany added two more in the top of the fifth when Quintana reached on an Eagle error. Fudge then put down a sacrifice bunt to moved her over to second. Flores then rocketed one over the fence to score herself and Quintana.
Finally, the Swedes added one more in the top of the seventh inning that was kicked off with a Flores single to short. She then moved over on a Colson single to center before scoring on a Martinez single to center field.
Flores went 3-for-4 in the game with two runs batted in while Colson and Martinez each notching two hits with Colson adding a double to her line.
Lauren Quintana, junior pitcher, threw the complete game shutout allowing four hits with three strikeouts.

The Swedes have a quick turnaround returning home for a non-conference doubleheader with Hastings College on Sunday, Mar. 17. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
