STEPHENVILLE, TX —The McPherson College Softball team wrapped up their weekend road trip to Texas with a pair of losses on Monday to NCAA DII Tarleton State University.
It was a tough day at the plate for the Bulldogs, who dropped game one, 10-1, then were shutout in the finale 2-0. Between the two games, the Bulldogs scattered nine hits, but were only able to scrape up the lone run. Seven of the nine Bulldog hits came in game one, and were all of the single variety. Jessica Jones was the only Bulldog to record multiple hits. She reached base twice in three attempts with a pair of singles. Chelsea Conrad scored the Bulldogs' only run, driven in by a single from Kylecia Taylor in the top of the fifth inning.
In game two, the Bulldogs were only able to scratch out two hits, singles by Jones and Jenna Christensen. It was a strong pitching performance by the TSU ace, who struck out 16 Bulldog hitters, and walked just two.
In the circle for the Bulldogs to start game one, was Brittany Baroni. She pitched the first three innings, allowing five runs on six hits. In the fourth inning, Sydney Lang came out of the bullpen and worked the next inning and a third. She was also credited with five runs, two of them coming on a walk off home run, on five hits. Collectively Baroni and Lang recorded four strikeouts and three walks.
Game two saw Christie Betker in the circle for the Bulldogs. Betker went the distance, giving up two runs on five hits. Her stat line also included eight strikeouts and four walks. Betker was collared with the loss, her fifth of the season and all of them by two runs or less. For the year, she has faced 245 batters, surrendering 44 hits and striking out 93 with only 16 walks.
With the losses to the Texans, the Bulldogs are now 11-10 on the year. They will be back in action on Wednesday, when they open up KCAC play on the road at Southwestern College. The Bulldogs and Moundbuilders will play a double header beginning at 4 p.m.
