WICHITA— The Swedes softball team was back in action with a non-conference doubleheader with the Jets of Newman University. Bethany fell to the NCAA Division II institution, 7-4 and 8-0.

NU – 7, BTHY – 4

The Jets started off with two runs in the bottom of the first inning before adding another in the bottom of the third inning. Bethany got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Ciera Flores, sophomore infielder, homered over the left field fence. Newman answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. They tacked on one more in the bottom of the fifth before the Swedes plated three in the sixth inning.

 Tannah Colson, freshman outfielder, kicked off the inning with a single to left center. Millenni Lucero, freshman pinch runner, then came in to take over the base paths for Colson. She moved to third on Alexis Martinez's, junior outfielder, double to left center. Lexie Valentine, senior infielder, loaded up the bases when she was hit by a pitch. The trio then scored on a Jet error on Courtney Fudge's, senior infielder, ball to right field.

Newman was able to answer with one more run of their own in the bottom of the sixth.

Flores, Colson and Martinez each had two hits for the Swedes. Flores added a home run to her line, while the other two each notched a double in the contest. Two other Swedes recorded hits in the contest.

Marisa Jervis, senior pitcher, suffered the loss throwing four complete innings. During this time she gave up five runs, four earned on five hits. Kaitlyn Wagner, junior pitcher, came in for the final two innings. During this time she allowed two earned runs on five hits.

NU – 8, BTHY - 0

The teams went scoreless through the first two innings of play. However, the Jets then got hot scoring two runs in the third, three in the fourth, and three in the fifth to finish out the game.

Hannah Price, sophomore outfielder, and Valentine were each notched hits in the contest. As team the Swedes left six runners on base.

Lauren Quintana, junior pitcher, took the loss for the Swedes throwing 3.2 innings. During this time, she allowed five runs, two earned on six hits. Ashley Nava, junior pitcher, allowed three earned runs on four hits in her 0.2 innings.

The Swedes are slated to take on Cottey College in a non-conference home double header on Thursday, Mar. 21. These games are set to begin at 11 a.m.
