TOWANDA—The McPherson High School girls soccer team picked up their first win, 3-1, in the AVCTL D-III league on the road against Circle High School on Tuesday night.
Bullpups Head Coach Chris Adrian was pleased on the performance. He also considered it to be a complete game by his Lady Pups despite still being banged up from last week's tournament.
"This was a big league win for the girls tonight. Circle has a nice, young team with a couple of really talented players that can take over a game," Adrian said. "We had a plan in place, and the girls executed it nicely."
The Bullpups recorded 19 shots on goal. Leading the Bullpups was Kenzie Godwin, who scored two goals off nine shots. She was on the attack 20 seconds into the first half when she nailed the first of her two goals, and would later score her second in the next half.
"Kenzee Godwin had a monster game getting nine shots off on goal on her own. She caused the Circle defense problems every time she got the ball," Adrian said.
Circle was able to pick up one goal off a counter attack to tie the game by one each to end the first half. The Bullpups responded by scoring two more goals by Godwin and Anna Nason to put away the Thunderbirds.
Lakyn Schieferecke also contributed with seven saves, marking her 36th saves of the year.
Adrian would also mention the performance by Mary Ann Wurm, Daphne Carillo and Lauren Hein to go along with the Bullpups defensive efforts against Circle.
"Mary Wurm had her best game of the season. She looked like she has been playing left back her entire life. She was calm, composed and also flew forward on the attack," Adrian said. "Daphne Carrillo and Lauren Hein also played great, keeping the speedy Circle forwards in front of them. Defensively I was really proud of how the girls defended as a team tonight. With some of the talent Circle possessed, it was important that the girls worked together and double-teamed as much as possible."
McPherson improves to 5-1 of the season and will return on Thursday to take Rose Hill High School at 6:30 p.m.
