SALINA – The McPherson Middle School boys tennis team traveled to Salina on Tuesday for a tournament where no team scores were kept, only individual results.

Joey Miller and Alex Wheat combined to go 4-0 for the day and gain a first-place gold in number two doubles for the Junior Pups, while the duos of Thomas Potter and Collin Winter, and Henry Boese and Aidan Wheaton, plus Reid Schuckman in singles all scored second-place finishes.

“The season is still young, and I am still learning a lot about the needs the players have,” Head Coach Ricardo Sanchez said. “The boys are getting good playing experience and are improving a lot each time they take the court. Everyone had some positives on the day. Sam (Houston) being down 2-5 and storming back to force a tiebreaker to Reid (Shuckman) losing to a player from Manhattan Anthony and then coming back later in the day and beating him the second time they played. The highlight would have to be the doubles play of Alex (Wheat) and Joey (Miller), both of which are new to the game but look like naturals out on the doubles court. Kayden (McVicker), playing at the top of the lineup is quickly learning what he needs to do to take his game to the next level against every other school’s top player.”

The Middle School Junior Pups will return to the court on Thursday when six players head back to Salina for another tournament.
