HESSTON — After taking seventh place at the state tournament last year in doubles, Smoky Valley High School’s Jake Lucas and Matt Lucas might be building toward something greater this year.
On Tuesday at the always-tough Hesston Invitational, Lucas and Lucas took second place to help lead the Vikings to a second place finish as a team. The Vikings tallied 110 team points and were only four points behind champions Trinity Academy.
Smoky Valley also had two additional entries that finished in the top eight.
The doubles team of Johann Rauchholz and Carson Byers finished seventh. They ended the day with a hard-earned 8-7 (3) win over Hesston.
In singles, Cole Brumbaugh took eighth. He lost an 8-6 decision to Buhler to finish the day. Cade Schneider also competed for Smoky Valley in singles, taking 12th place.
The Vikings have one more tournament before the postseason begins on Monday with league. Smoky Valley hosts an invitational on Thursday beginning at 3 p.m.
