WINFIELD — In a meet that featured the top-ranked teams in 4A and 3-2-1A, the McPherson High School boys tennis team proved they could hang with the best the state has to offer.
The Bullpups outlasted top-ranked Buhler but were edged by Wichita Collegiate on Monday at the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division III/IV Meet on Monday in Winfield.
The Bullpups reached the finals in two of the four divisions and all four entries won their opening round match.
McPherson head coach Tyler Brown believes his team is playing its best tennis at an opportune time.
“I feel the team is still making gains with each tournament we play,” Brown said. “We have our final week of practice this week leading into regionals so hopefully the weather will cooperate with us.”
In singles, Jarrod Nowak won the No. 1 division while Jackson Schrader was second at No. 2.
In doubles, Brennan Gipson and Conner Glazner were third at No. 1 while Logan Hardgrave and Tyler Bontrager were fourth at No. 2.
The Bullpups will have the luxury of hosting regionals on Friday and Saturday as the team looks to qualify for state. Regionals on Friday begins at 10 a.m.
