LINDSBORG – Big second innings powered the Smoky Valley High School softball team to a dominated doubleheader sweep of Halstead at home on Thursday. The Lady Vikings scored a 14-4 win in game one before closing out the nightcap with a 16-6 victory.

In game one, Smoky Valley poured across 10 runs in the second inning after getting three in the first to take an early 13-0 lead on their way to the five-inning 14-4 win.

Five Lady Vikings had two hits in the game including Lindsey Gerlach, Madi Tolle, Claire Broxterman, Kira Haxton and Addison Haiden. Gerlach had a double while knocking across three runs and scoring twice. Smoky Valley was helped by seven errors by the Halstead defense.

Lauren Barnes pitched a complete game and the win for Smoky Valley and scattered seven hits, giving up the four runs while striking out three and walking a pair.

Game two was much the same for the Lady Vikings as they scored three in the first and powered across 13 in the second on their way to the 16-6 victory.

Madi Tolle led the offense with three hits that including two doubles, while Kira Haxton and Addison Haiden each had a pair of hits. Emmie Ryals earned credit for three runs batted in.

Abby Hipp started the game for Smoky Valley and went two innings giving up five hits and four runs while Liv Morgan finished out the final three innings and gave up just two hits and two runs.

With the two wins the Lady Vikings are now 9-9 overall and 9-7 in the Central Kansas League. They will be back on the diamond on Tuesday, May 7, when they host Haven High School.
