Despite a strong overall performance and near domination in doubles, the McPherson Middle School boys tennis team closed out their 2019 season at home on Thursday by finishing third in the Pioneer League Tennis Meet.

The Junior Pups finished third overall behind league champion Salina Lakewood and Newton.

It was 10 of 12 Junior Pup players earned medals on the day including gold in three of the four doubles matches.

Earning gold in doubles were the duos of Tucker Nelson and Trenton Huff at No.2 doubles, Reid Schuckman and Joey Miller at No.3 doubles, and Hunter Mendez and Henry Boese competing at No.4 doubles. All three doubles teams went 4-0 for the day.

In singles, Kayden McVicker, Alex Wheat and Josh Wehrman all placed second while Thomas Potter finished third.

“The top three teams in the tournament all finished very close,” Head Coach Ricardo Sanchez said. “Ten of twelve players medaled after they each played four tough matches. One of the highlights from the day includes three of the doubles entrees winning their brackets. They all played some tough matches where they had to find ways to win when things weren’t going their way. Another highlight was Kayden McVicker, not only did he finish in second place, but he was able to beat a player from Salina South that he had lost to at the beginning of the season. It just shows how hard he has been working this season. My final highlight would be Alex Wheat in his final match because of the round robin format of the tournament, he was in a unique position where if he won he would finish second but if he lost he would finish in last place. He played extremely hard and was able to find a way to win the tiebreaker.”

In looking back on the 2019 season, Coach Sanchez concluded his coach reflections by saying, “While we started our season with only three returners from last year, we had a good mix of 15 seventh and eighth graders join the team. I was excited to see how the seventh graders developed throughout the season and am excited to see them continue to improve. I do wish I would’ve had more time with our new eighth graders, as they were all so passionate out on the court and I enjoyed watching them grow throughout the season. They are a huge reason for the success of the team this season.”
