GREAT BEND— The McPherson College softball team suffered their first loss of the KCAC postseason tournament on Friday afternoon, falling to the Friends University Falcons, 3-2.
It was a tightly contested game from the onset as both teams' pitchers were on their games. Christie Betker was in the circle again for the Bulldogs and got off to a rough start. She finished with three runs on ten hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
Betker escaped the first two innings unscathed, but in the top of the third, the Falcons finally touched her with a run. They added another in the top of the fifth, and then ended up walking in a run in the top of the seventh, which turned out to be the winning run for the Falcons.
Offensively, the Bulldogs struggled to get hits against the Falcons ace, Hali Walters. They managed just two runs on six hits, but left eight runners stranded on base. Twice they had the bases loaded with less than two out, and only once did they score a run in that situation. The six Bulldog hits were of the one base variety and came off the bats of five different hitters. Destiny Bacon was the only Bulldog to record more than one hit, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Bulldogs were held scoreless for the first four innings. They finally broke through and tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. They had the bases loaded with one out when a single by Maile Deutsch scored Jessica Jones from third. The next batter was Bacon, who singled up the middle to drive in the second Bulldog run.
Unfortunately the rally stalled out, and the Bulldogs left the bases loaded to end the inning. They were unable to get things started up again in the sixth or seventh innings, and the Falcons were able to escape with the win.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 32-15 on the season, and into the back side of the draw for the tournament. It's a double elimination tournament, so the Bulldogs could still comeback and get a shot at the championship. To do so, they will have to go through the Tabor College Bluejays in an elimination game on Saturday at 2:30 pm.
