WICHITA—Mother nature may have come at a bad time, but the McPherson High School golf team  peaked at the right time.At what could be the highlight of the season, the Bullpups won the AVCTL Division-III league with the score of 163 at the Rolling Hills Country Club in Wichita. The Bullpups beat out Buhler High School (172) and Augusta High School (181).

Hayes Schmid shined in the league tournament as he led McPherson with the score of 37, which placed him second behind Jacob George of Winfield High School. Three more Bullpups finished in the top 12 at the tournament. Neil Raymond shot 40, which put him sixth, and Gus Ruddle followed behind in seventh with 42. Tyler Hoxie scored 44, which tied with Will Yates of Buhler and Dakota Dill of Circle. Cooper Courtney (49) and Jace Kinnamon (57)  also competed for the Bullpups as both finished in the 20s.

Schmid and Raymond were selected First Team All-AVCTL D-III, while Ruddle and Hoxie made second-team.The Bullpups, slowly but surely, have been improving all season long. This is their first, first-place finish this season. Momentum is on their side just in time for regionals coming up on Monday.

"I was very pleased with the way that our guys played in some very tough conditions with rain off and on all day long," McPherson Head Coach Kurt Kinnamon said. "To place four players in the top 12 was an outstanding accomplishment. I am proud of all six of these guys because I can see the work that they are putting in starting to pay off. Hopefully this is a group that is peaking at the right time, and they will be at their best on Monday at the regional."
