TOPEKA— As McPherson High School and Smoky Valley swim team went its separate ways at the Class 5A State Championship, it was the Lady Vikings that shined over the weekend. With the score of 57 points, Smoky Valley finished the tournament in 13th place. McPherson finished 26th with 11 points.

The highlight of the weekend was the 200 freestyle relay team after finishing in the top eight during the preliminaries on Friday and was placed sixth in the finals on Saturday. The relay team included Macie Carlson, Avery Van Der Wege, Kaylie Ryan and Karik Elliott, and they swam with the time of 1:45.77. Bullpups Head Coach Abby Bradstreet was amazed by the way her Viking swimmers performed throughout the tournament.

"Going into state this relay was ranked 18th. They finished today ranked sixth. I think what I love about this team the most is the dedication and amount of heart they put into their swims," Bradstreet said. "They want to succeed, and failure is not an option for them in their minds. They worked hard, and it definitely paid off big time this weekend."

As the season came to an end, Bradstreet looks forward to reuniting all her swimmers with only losing one senior.

"I am so proud of every single one of the girls on this team," Bradstreet said. "It's exciting to know that we are basically coming back with the exact same team next year. I can't wait to see them grow and improve in their swims and am already excited for the next season.”
