It's going a whole new group of runners for the McPherson High School cross country team. McPherson Head Coach Aspen Lott will be in search for new leaders for this coming season.

The Bullpups lost six runners from both the boys and girls side. Ethan Pickerell and Riley Shelton and Justus Hampton are the Bullpups' top seniors returning this season.

For Lott, she will have to rely on her underclassmen to make an impact right away.

"With the seniors class leaving, we will definitely be a young team this year," Lott said. "However, we have several athletes that have competed for varsity who experience and will step up into new leadership positions as the season starts."

Cody Achilles, whenever he's not too busy competing with the boys soccer team or with the swim team, will bring enough stamina in his junior campaign. On the girls' side, Courtney Eickbush (junior), Marissa Pearcy, and Evie Elder (sophomore) will be Lott's top three runners to lead the Lady Bullpups.

"This group will be hard-working, dedicated athletes who will put the time and effort into accomplishing some big goals this season," Lott said. "They have already started by running consistently as a group throughout the summer."

The Bullpups' first invitational will be on Sept. 5 at Lake Barton beginning at 4 p.m. Other schools participating will be Garden City, Great Bend, Hays, Hutchinson, Newton, Salina South and Wichita Southeast.
