MAIZE—The McPherson High School boys soccer team was in another tough matchup, but this time it was against Andover High School in the opening round of the Maize South Invitational. Similar to last week's win over Salina High School, the Bullpups survived at the last few minutes in the second half, beating the Trojans 2-1 on Tuesday evening.
"This team once again pulled out a good win against a quality opponent, "Bullpups Head coach Chris Adrian said. "Andover was bigger and stronger in a lot of positions, but I thought the team played hard and smart."
The Bullpups had to deal with some high winds so, Adrian focused on counter-attacks on defense against the Trojans. Both teams went scoreless in the first half. The Bullpups got going led by Rhett Edmonson as he gave the Bullpups' first goal of the night. The Trojans responded with a goal of their own to tie the game. With 15 minutes left, Drew Schrader was on the attack and scored a game-winner for the Bullpups with the assist by Edmonson.
"Rhett Edmonson once again showed how important a player he is for this team scoring the first goal and assisting the second," Adrian said. The second half was all about keeping the play in front of us and waiting for Andover to make a mistake in their defensive end, which was exactly what happened on the first goal."
Nathan Lloyd made his return to the starting lineup at the goalkeeper after sitting out last week due to a concussion. It was like he never left as he finished the night with seven saves. The Bullpups continue to find a way to finish games as they improve
"It wasn't our best performance of the year, and I definitely could have prepared the team better, but I was really pleased to see this team grind out a result," Adrian said. "It's a special group of guys that have a lot of confidence in each other.
The Bullpups will return to Maize on Thursday as they get a rematch with Salina South at 3:30 p.m. The Bullpups beat the Cougars 3-2 in overtime last week. The Cougars are coming off a 10-0 shutout against Thomas Moore Prep.
