GODDARD — McPherson High School did not bring its normal top six to the Goddard Invitational on Tuesday, but that did not stop the Bullpups from competing well.
McPherson finished second out of four teams. Conway Springs won the invitational with 11 points, while the Bullpups and Wichita Independent each had five points. Goddard, with three points, rounded out the lineup.
“I thought this group did very well, for some of them playing in their first varsity meet,” head coach Tyler Brown said. “To get second as a team at this level says a lot about these girls that played today.”
The Bullpups were strong in doubles with Lakynn Lippelman and Amethyst Hale finishing 2-1 for second at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Grace Witte and Kinley Dietrich also went 2-1 for second.
“Our doubles anchored the team today, both getting second place and only dropping one match on the day,” Brown said.
At No. 1 singles, Taylor Berger went 1-2 for third. Berger defeated Goddard’s No. 1 singles entry after she found herself down big in the match.
“Although some of our younger ones still have much to learn at this level, Taylor Berger showed what it means to fight and never give up on the court,” Brown said. “Taylor was down 0-5 in her second match against Goddard to come back and win in a tiebreaker. I absolutely love seeing girls continuing to fight and believing that wherever they find themselves in the match they can turn it around.”
Loghan Engelbrecht rounded out the McPherson lineup by going 0-3 at No. 2 singles.
The McPherson junior varsity girls tennis team has its league tournament at home on Thursday beginning at 10 a.m.
The varsity hosts a home invitational on Saturday.
