ELLSWORTH—The Smoky Valley cross country team had another strong performance on the road at Ellsworth on Tuesday. The boys came through with a first-place finish, while the girls took second.
"Today was a successful day in Ellsworth," Vikings Head coach Holly Toll said. "We had the opportunity to run a hilly course. We don't get in a lot of hill running due to the lack of hills near Lindsborg, so I thought we faired well considering we don't practice on them a whole lot. Our times are looking better than they were last year at this time. My hope is that we can peak at the right time, and that is in the meets in the next few weeks."
Leading the boys was Ryan Heline, as he was the top finisher with the time of 18:01. Garret Huffman (5th) and Lukas Appel (9th) cracked the top ten, giving enough points to take first as a team.
"The boys ran united as a team and finished in first," Toll said. "Ryan ran a strong race to be the individual champion."
For the girls, three runners made the top ten. Gracie Lambert was Lady Vikings' top finisher with a fourth-place finish. Olivia Bengtson (7th) and Breanna Priddy (9th) also medaled for the girls.
"The girls ran very well as a team, despite Ellise Peterson having a hurt hip," Toll said. "I had her drop the race so that we can hopefully get her healthy for our upcoming meets."
The Vikings will now focus on the Central Kansas League Championship in Larned next Thursday at 4 p.m.
