KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Bethany College men's soccer team picked up its first conference win of the 2019 season with a 3-2 overtime win at Avila University.
The Swedes struck first in the match when Jack Rhys-Jones, senior midfielder, converted a penalty kick in the 15th minute. The Eagles continued to pressure the Swedes defensive unit, eventually equalizing in the 38th minute. Shortly after their first goal, Avila was able to pull ahead in the match with a goal in the 39th minute to take a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime. The Swedes continued to battle throughout the second half looking to tie up the game and force overtime. In the 73rd minute, Rhys-Jones struck again to force extra time and keep the Swedes' spirits alive. After a scoreless first overtime the Swedes were eventually able to score the game winning goal in the 107th minute off a strike from Lisandro Nunez, junior forward.
Head coach, Shane Taylor was pleased with victory and had this to say after the match, "I'm happy to get our first conference win. The team showed great resiliency coming back from being down 2-1 with only 10 men. It was a great team effort today!"
As a team, the Swedes had a total of five shots in the match compared to the 12 for the Eagles. Roland Kiss, sophomore goalkeeper, made three saves to help the Swedes get the victory.
The Bethany College men's soccer team looks to continue the momentum when they travel to McPherson College to take on the Bulldogs in a tough KCAC match-up. The Swedes and Bulldogs will kick off at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct.19.
