NEWTON — The McPherson High School volleyball team, ranked sixth in 5A in the preseason rankings, opened the season with a 4-0 performance at the modified AVCTL Preseason Tournament in Newton.


The Bullpups did not drop a set en route to four wins. The closest match the Bullpups played was a 25-22, 27-25 over host Newton.


McPherson opened the day with a statement win over Derby. The Bullpups won the first set 25-8, then won a much more contested set, 26-24, to win the match.


McPherson did not receive much of a challenge from Valley Center, winning the first set 25-9 and the second set 25-13.


The Bullpups rounded out the day by defeating Garden City in straight sets, 25-17, 25-22.


Rhian Swanson led the Bullpups on the day with 54 kills and four blocks. Katie Berg was second on the team with 33 kills and first on the team with four aces.


Brett Doile, who led the Bullpups in assists, also had four aces. Taylor Casebeer had a team-high 38 digs.


Newton rebounded from its loss against McPherson and went 3-1 on the day. Derby went 2-2, Garden City went 1-3, and Valley Center went 0-4.


McPherson will likely be tested in its next matchup. The Bullpups travel to Andale on Sept. 1 for a triangular with top-ranked Andale (4A) and Winfield.
