McPHERSON — Tied at seven at the end of the first quarter, the McPherson High School football team outscored Great Bend 24-6 the rest of the way for a 31-13 win Friday night at McPherson Stadium.
The Bullpups, now 3-0, scored on the game’s first play when Jaytin Gumm took a handoff 64 yards for a touchdown.
Great Bend, now 0-3, answered right back with a Gavin Haberman touchdown.
The two teams remained locked at seven for most of the half, but the Bullups were able to take a touchdown lead into halftime when Aaron Powell scored on a 27-yard rush with under two minutes remaining.
McPherson scored right out of halftime on a 40-yard touchdown from quarterback Dylan Rinker to receiver Trey Bukbee, but the Panthers had a response.
Joseph Moeder scored from the one to make it a 21-13 game, but from there McPherson was able to pull away.
The Bullpups tacked on a 24-yard field goal in the third, then put the finishing touches on an 18-point win with a Brycen Labertew one-yard touchdown run.
McPherson will look to remain unbeaten next week at Winfield (1-2).
