Salthawks nearly pull off massive upset at Dodge City
DODGE CITY — Against one of the best teams in all of Kansas, the Hutchinson High School boys soccer team ended its season in the opening rounds of Class 6A Regionals on Thursday.
The Salthawks took Dodge City, now 16-0, to overtime, but fell 2-1.
The two teams were scoreless in the first half, but Hutchinson struck first six minutes into the second half. The Salthawks led for about 20 minutes, but Dodge City tied the game at one with nine minutes left in regulation.
The two teams went into overtime tied at one, but Dodge City was able to outlast a resilient effort from the visiting Salthawks.
With the loss, Hutchinson ends the season with a 6-11 record. With the win, Dodge City moves on to face Liberal on Saturday for a spot at state.
McPherson thumps Abilene to start playoffs
McPHERSON — The McPherson High School football team began the Class 4A Playoffs by scoring 36 points in the first quarter. The Bullpups followed it up with 34 points in the second quarter en route to a 78-14 win over Abilene on Thursday night.
McPherson led 70-0 at halftime.
McPherson rushed the ball for 332 yards as a team while throwing for 113 yards.
Jayce Schriner rushed for 125 yards on eight carries, while Andrew Gumm had 108 yards on seven carries.
With the win, McPherson (8-1) will host the winner of Augusta and Ulysses next week.
