WINFIELD – It was close for half a game before the McPherson boys clamped down on the defense and took control in the second half to score a much needed 59-46 win on the road at Winfield on Friday.

Buhler's Isaiah Hernandez (14) left, and Hayden Keller (4) try to stop McPherson's Jayton Alexander (24) earlier this season. Alexander scored 12 against WInfield in the Bullpup win.

Throughout the first half, it appeared that Winfield would once again play the Bullpups down to the wire like they did in their previous matchup as the Vikings went six-of-seven from beyond the three-point line and made 12-of-18 shots overall from the field to score 31 points and hold a one-point lead over the Bullpups as the two teams headed for the halftime break.

But when McPherson came out for the final 16 minutes of play, they had the look and the play like things were going to change and they put the heavy clamps on the Winfield offense with some stifling defense, holding the Vikings to just two points and not a single field goal made in the third quarter on their way to the final 13-point victory.

According to comments made by Bullpup Coach Kurt Kinnamon in a post-game radio interview, the team had an extremely healthy chat during the halftime break about giving up so many outside shots and points.

Seth Madron led the Bullpups with 17 points while Jayton Alexander chipped in with 12 and Adam Elliot had one of his best games of the season by scoring 11 which included hitting on three three-pointers.

With a loss by Augusta to Buhler, the Bullpups are now 7-1 in AVCTL Division III games and sitting in first place all by themselves despite just having a 9-8 record overall.

McPherson still has three very tough games ahead for the final week of the regular season with Andale coming to the Roundhouse on Monday followed by a visit from Augusta on Tuesday before finishing the week off by hosting Circle on Friday.

Ten players put points in the scorebook for the Bullpups Junior Varsity as they scored a 19-point, 54-35 win over Winfield, led by Dawson Feil with 11 and Trey Buckbee with 10.

After losing their first game of the season on Thursday to Hutchinson, the Bullpup freshman team buried Winfield 77-34 as five Pups put double digits in scoring by their name in the scorebook, led by Kyden Thompson with 17. Gavin Wedel, Kreighton Kanitz, Owen Pyle and Alex Robertson each chipped in with 10.
