Wrestlers qualify one for state
With six wrestlers qualified for the KSHSAA Girls Division II Sub-State 1 tournament, McPherson was in a strong position to start the day.
However, only one of the six was able to qualify for the state tournament as the team scored 34 points to finished 12th in the standings Feb. 19 at Ellis High School.
Holi Giddings was a buzzsaw at 155 pounds, winning the tournament with falls over each of her opponents. She opened her tournament with a :45 second fall over Addybelle Birdsall of Plainville then punched her ticket to the tournament final with a :32 fall over Sydney Redetzke of Ellis. Giddings made it a trifecta of falls with a 1:50 fall over Lauren Kinsey of Nickerson.
The state tournament will be Feb. 26 at the Tony's Pizza Event Center in Salina.
At 101 Baker Riley, finished sixth overall — opening her day with a loss by fall to Sheena Gocela of Hoisington before getting a 14-4 win over Cassie Herron of Cottonwood falls. A loss by fall to Lily Herman of Pratt followed by a loss by fall to Allie Pippitt of Burden-Central put her in sixth overall. Baker finsihed the season 17-21.
At 126 Catalina Palacois finished sixth. She rebounded from a loss by fall to Payton Woody of Prat in the opening round with a 2:50 fall over Delaney Hamm of Mulvane. That would be her only win of the day, however, falling 11-4 to Isabella Keessee of Phillipsburg and losing by fall to Bella Wernli of El Dorado to end her day. Palacois finished the day 17-17 overall.
191 Erin Katina finished sixth at 191 pounds. She surrended a fall in the opening round fall to Sierra Lanning of Smith Cener before winning by injury default in the second round. Her third round match was a loss by fall to Paython Scholander of Douglass. In the fifth place match Katina dropped a 5-0 decision to Gracie Temmel of Norton. Katina ends the season 15-16 overall.
115 Amethyst Hale did not place, surrendering a first-round fall to Isabell Ortiz of Lakin before surrendering a fall to Kathie Chavez of Colby. Hale ends her season 10-14 overall.
At 132 Arriana Gross did not place after surrendering a fall to Marissa Porsch of Hoxi and a fall to Alexa Guzman of Lyons. Gross finished the season 8-17 overall.
In boys action, two members of the McPherson Bullpup squad qualified for the substate tournament — Brock Burgess at 113 pounds and Gavin Richardson at 152 pounds.
Neither was able to qualify for the state tournament.
Burgess opened the day with a 10-0 loss to Dalton Weber of Pratt, the finished the day with a 6-2 loss of Aiden Cook of Colby. Burgess ended his season 13-18 overall.
Richardson opned the day with a 2-0 loss to Ian Aouad of Andale before surrendering afall to Peyton Besco of Rose Hill. Richardson ends his season 21-19 overall.
