McPherson schools moving forward with bond issue
During a special meeting early Thursday, March 11, the McPherson USD 418 Board of Education unanimously approved forwarding the Community Visioning Committee’s recommendation to a June 8 public vote.
The $112.8 million scope includes:
• Safety and security upgrades at all elementary schools.
• Renovation and reconfiguration of the existing Middle School into a fifth/sixth (5/6) grade learning center and USD 418 District Offices.
• Renovations and additions at the High School,
• The construction of a new seventh/eighth (7/8) Middle School on the same site as the high school
According to USD 418 Superintendent Shiloh Vincent, “Today, the board affirmed the important work of the Visioning Committee by placing their recommendation on the ballot for voter approval. We look forward to continuing this community conversation over the coming months as we work towards ensuring the brightest possible future for every student in McPherson.”
The district facilities process began in 2019 and has included more than a year of review and planning by the architectural and construction partners DLR Group and Hutton Construction, as well as nine Community Visioning Committee sessions.
A key component of the proposal includes an agreement with the City of McPherson to allocate a one-half cent of the existing sales tax toward the project, which while not increasing the overall sales tax rate would help to offset the cost to property owners.
The City of McPherson will vote on this portion of the proposal at next week’s meeting.
